Caricature live sketching for another birthday party

Birthday celebration for this gentleman's 60th birthday at Sano Bar at One Fullerton.

1.5 hours event for me.
Managed to reach One Fullerton carpark around 8pm (from SSC event) without any traffic jam (NYE countdown near Esplanade tonight), as I took the route of ECP, exit from Prince Edward Road, instead of taking the route of Nicoll Highway.

Saw some crowd along the shoreline. Found the outdoor white tent of Sano Bar. Thought I will be sitting there to sketch for the night, at least can have a nice view of the Esplanade side.
Called the client, and only to find out that their party was held indoor - the other part of Sano Bar.
Not that bad at all. At least air-conditioned.

This little boy was second on the queue list. Waited eagerly for his turn.
Since the little girl (see below) wasn't around, I started with him.
Quite surprised when he told me he likes bowling.
He uses a bowling ball for 6-year-old kid. No wonder.....

Didn't realise that she wrote her name twice on the queue list.
Caricature bithday party 311207 8
She asked me if I can draw from her previous caricature, which I have just drawn.
I would prefer to sketch from the real person again.Anyway, some details were lost in the caricature sketching process.Hmmm...... if I use the first caricature as reference for the second piece, second piece as reference for the third piece, and so on.... wonder what will happen to the tenth piece. Is it the best version? Minimum lines which will capture the essence of that person? Or can't recognise that person at all? Maybe can try it one day... but I don't like to repeat. Already felt bored sketching her face for second time.....

As I was sketching halfway, I realised there were quite a number of people (think more than 20 people) crowding outside ( we were sitting next to full-height glass windows). Was the crowd interested in my drawing, or in this sexily dressed in low V-cut dress lady? Could be both, as there were some ladies among the crowd, but most of them were guys! Hahaha.....

Caricature live sketching for Singapore Swimming Club (SSC)

An hour event at Singapore Swimming Club.
Name of the event was NYE - New Year's Eve?
Think it was meant for their members.
Caricature Singapore Swimming Club NYE 1
She was a bit nervous when I was sketching her.
Looked left and right except looking straight at me, which I have told her to many times.

Caricature Singapore Swimming Club NYE 2
She told me her caricature was very nice, after the event. Thank you. Glad that she likes it.

An enthusiastic gentleman, waiting eagerly for his turn to get his caricature done.

Caricature Singapore Swimming Club NYE 5
First look at him told me that his caricature will come out good, as he has unique (and thus easy-to-draw) features. Thick pointing-inward eyebrows, smiling small eyes, long slim nose, but nostril facing the front. Beside there were the high forehead and long ears etc. Too many easy-to-capture features. Can't go too far off, in terms of resemblance.

Caricature Singapore Swimming Club NYE 6
While I was sketching her, the SSC organiser asked me whether I can extend my service for another hour.Told her that I can't, as I have another event to sketch for .She told her guests that she will getting me back for their next year event, since now she knew that I am so good. (That's what she said.) Thank you!

Last one, gave him a full body, as I can't think of a better posture for him, and I have some time left, but not enough for another caricature.

Caricature theme - wedding

Caricatures couple wedding 311207
Client's brief:-
"1) my fiancee and i would like to be in wedding gown and suit in the drawing.

2) We got to know each other in the school military band so can we have some people at the background with our band uniform as per pic attached (pic 6 & 7) playing some instruments?

3) If drawing people in uniform is not possible, probably some musical instruments as the background? (do let me know if u need me to look for the pics of instruments to be drawn)

4) My fiancee will like you to draw her with long fringe as per pic 5 and also she would like to have longer eye lashes in the drawings"

Caricature live sketching for a birthday party

A birthday party for a Jewish girl turning 12 today, held in Hilton Hotel.
Quite shocked that there were more than 200 guests here.
Considered a big birthday party to me, at least.
I was placed at a corner where nobody will notice.
Told the organiser make an announcement of a caricature sketching service available.
He had me seated at the reception table instead.
Caricature birthday party 301207 1
He is a singer. Wanted a microphone in his hand. Added in the musical notes, or else could be an emcee too.
See the kids queueing behind him?
They were so excited about having their faces being drawn on paper.

The little girl has a pair of beautiful eyes. Not really shown in this photo.

Caricature birthday party 301207 5
The birthday girl.
Looked rather matured to me.
She wanted a Pinocchio long nose for her caricature.
Told her that it won't look good (though she has a rather big nose)
Drawn her a puppet body instead, and she loves it!
Don't tell me she's a puppet.....

Caricature birthday party 301207 6
Time is running out, but he pleaded me to do a samurai body for him.
'Boy, your wish is fulfilled!'

Caricature birthday party 301207 7
He pleaded me to draw him in a bikini suit.
Seems like these kids have all sorts of funny ideas.

Caricature birthday party 301207 8
He wanted a snake tongue sticking out from his mouth (???!!!), with a gun in his hand.
He told me the caricature looked cool, upon receiving it.

Caricature theme - Chelsea soccer player with beer

Caricature Chelsea soccer player & beer
60th birthday gift for his party tomorrow. Looks rather young in the photo provided. Perhaps not a recently taken photo, but certainly a nicely taken studio photo.
This is what I enjoyed most in drawing - good lighting photo, unique features, nice expression, good composition (bird's eye view). All these made up a good caricature and artwork.

Frankly speaking, I don't enjoy in all my drawings, as some photos, faces, features, compositions etc, are just not fun to draw, but draw based on my clients request. Usually, I will add in my ideas and comments if possible, which should spice up the whole artwork. Like what I told Wilfred - You may like to eat durians, but not all durians taste good. What we say in Chinese - 可遇不可求!

Add on.....

The client missed out one of the important persons. Sent back to me to add in.
Looked a bit out of place, but that was the only space left.
Still think the original version looked better......

For someone special......

Caricature trader bull and bear fighting

For someone who is willing to share his knowledge and giving me guidance unconditionally.
Only way I can think of thanking him, is to give him a meaningful gift, in this case, a caricature of him. He has the ability to make money in the bull and bear market every trading day. Thus, the theme which I have been thinking in mind these few months is along this line.
Upon completion of this artwork, I have another idea, which I should have made the background better, by including the bar chart graph with trend lines in lighter colours, against a dark background. It would have look better, rather than a direct approach of the 'long' and 'short' graphs and headings. But it is too late.
Maybe I can make another version, done digitally......

Caricature theme - 'Tai Tai' in UK

The client wanted to present this farewell gift to this lady who will be migrating to UK to be a 'Tai Tai'. In fact a housewife, as she used to have a maid in Singapore, but not in UK. Hence, I drawn in some cooking utensils in her handbag, while she is shopping in her Burberry suit.
Background is the London Bridge and Merlion.

Caricature theme - Mr & Mrs Wong

Caricatures Mr & Mrs Wong Suzuki Sports
Mr and Mrs Smith theme again, but without the guns. The couple wanted them in wedding suit and gown, with the car in the background. The car looked rather out of place, especially when they wanted to show the 'Suzuki Sports' on the rear door of the car. The space left was not enough to show the whole car.

Caricature for Tengah Air Base

Not having him popped out from the plane (don't really like this idea), but put him on a hill top, with the plane in the background. Not sure of the model of this plane. It was the client's idea to include it.

Caricature theme - Santarina

Santarina in a chimney.... last Christmas order cleared.

Caricature in ink

Caricature ink 241207
Client's request:-
"I need to give to the person on 24 Dec as we play secret Santa. So I think this will be a good idea....."

Not sure of how secret Santa is played.... anyway my job is to draw this caricature.

Caricature theme - Snowball fight

Caricatures Snowball fight A4
Obviously a Christmas gift.
The client especially like the part she smashed the guy with the snowball, and now the reverse.
Told her that was what my female clients preferred when it came to couple caricatures for themselves. Hahaha.....

Caricature theme - piggy back

Straightforward job -Piggy back with a BMW motorbike in the background.

Caricature theme - Super Rowberrys

Deliberately cut down my Christmas orders, partly because of this order.
My instinct told me that I will need a longer time on this family caricatures.
An order all the way from United States. The client wanted to present this to his family as a Christmas gift. He requested this artwork to be scanned into soft copy, so that he can get it on that side, and get it printed in time. I uploaded the files to my server for him to download, as they were too big to be sent across through emails. The original A2 file size was already about 42mb, with 300dpi resolution.

Client's brief:-
"I just thought that all in similar looking suits (but still show off superpower) could look good OR all in different outfits (one with a fire body, ice body, other outfits etc...could also work......
Whichever you think works better is fine. I'm fine with you designing it as a forest or city or wherever your inspiration takes you. Most important is that it comes through as a family of superheros....not just 8 superheros on a page.......
Super Powers: (you can make any of them fly also if that helps the picture)
Dad: Super Strong
Mom: Controls Environment
Tyler: Super Gadgets (like batman)
Lanae: Force Field
Sasha: Elasticity - Flexible
Coleman: Super Fast
Josh: Ice
Alia: Fire "

Designed a suit (with a "R" in front of the chest) for the whole family, instead of all in different suits.
It looked better as a family, I think.
Next was to layout the different characters with superpower.
The most difficult parts were the superpower of 'controls environment' and ' force field', especially to show it in a medium of colour markers.

Inked out the details. The overall picture became clearer now, but still lack of something.
The whole artwork looked loose, without a common setting.

Initially idea was to have them in red suit, but it looked too much like "The Incredibles"
I need a bright yellow for the "R" logo. Change the overall suit to ultramarine blue. The whole picture brightened up, when in contrast with the fire.
Added in some more smoke effects on the bottom right, to fill up the space, and to enhance the atmosphere. I forsaken the city or forest setting in the end, as it caused too much distractions, no impact and contrast. Put in a black setting instead. Now, the whole artwork had a strong contrast, as the superpower like 'force field', fire, smoke etc were light in colours.
Noticed at this stage that I spelled the surname in the heading wrongly.
Thinking hard of how to settle this mistake.
I removed the "S" in between, broaden the "B", and it happened that I added in the white highlight with liquid paper to enhance the mum's super power. The mistake looked not that obvious now.
Overall, this family caricatures turned out good to me. I am satisfied with it. Worth my efforts in spending more time and attention to it.

Caricatures for Attorney-General Chambers

A gift for this gentleman's retirement.
Another collage/montage style of caricatures, about what he has done.
Promised the client not to put the content of these caricatures online, as they were quite sensitive. In the way, the search engine spiders/robots will not index these sensitive issues.
They will just viewed it as a graphic.
Caricatures Attorney-General Chambers pencil
Surprisingly, the pencil sketches were done quite fast, as compared to the job for DBS one.
Perhaps, he has unique features, and I strike it in first round of sketch.
The themes were easy to be drawn, and straight-forward too, unlike the DBS building, percussion drum etc.
Caricatures Attorney-General Chambers pen
Inking was easier too.

Caricatures Attorney-General Chambers A4
So were the colouring part.

Caricatures Attorney-General Chambers framed
Looked especially good when framed up.
The clients were quite excited when they collected this framed artwork.
Their comments were "so cute" and "look so much like him"
Glad to hear that.

Caricature for Standard Chartered Bank (SCB)

Caricature SCB Big Ben Merlion Esplanade
This client got my contact from their bank event in Suntec.
Farewell gift to this guy, who will be leaving for London.
They found the caricature I have done on website, and wanted a similar one.
Gave him a fan, with the Big Ben of London, and Esplanade and (weeping) Merlion of Singapore.
The SCB logo was added in upon the client's request.

Caricature theme - chef

Caricature chef 171207
Client's brief:-
"if i have the photo of the person, can you turn it into a caricature with marker theme that can be sized down for us to insert on a name card (small sized)?
...Also need to have the caricature done with a chef hat, apron, wielding some cooking utensils on one hand and a glass of champagne on the other.
...Are you able to do the chef hat and apron in green colour please? A nice dark green and also, on chef hat or apron (either one) to indicate "Chloe". Chef's apron over white or black tank top. If can't see tank top, then just the apron will do
."

Caricature theme - bowling

Caricatures bowling turkey xxx
Meant as a wedding gift.
They love bowling.
XXX is known as turkey in bowling, as what the client told me.
She wanted to have the groom in turkey suit.
Added in the blue and yellow zoomed in effect to give the whole caricature more impact, as well as comical effect.
The last time I used this method was more than a decade ago - a job for American Club.

Caricature live sketching for Madhatter Affairs D&D 2007

An hour event at Fort Canning, The gallery.

Right from the beginning I saw his face, I knew I will enjoy this sketching session.
His features looked comical and fun to draw to me.

This guy especially. He's quite humorous too.
His facial expressions, head shape and hairline reminded me of Eric Tsang. 曾志伟.

Can't hold her smile, or to be precised - can't smile. So, a non-smiling caricature.

Caricature Swiss Reinsurance 6
The guests surrounding me said her caricature had the closest resemblance among them.

This one too. Closest resemblance. But a bit extreme on her chin. Hahaha.......
