Lady portraits in watercolour

Portraits of a lady in watercolour - pencil sketch
Same lady, but in 3 different angles. The one in the centre is drawn from the more recently taken photo. The other are taken few years ago, according to what the client told me.

Portraits of a lady in watercolour - progress 1
The client wanted these portraits in blue colourpencil initially.

Think he must have seen this portraits on my website, and decided to go for this, since his girl loves blue colour.
Gave him my view - I doubt it will look good for a lady portrait in blue colourpencil.
Why doesn't he take the watercolour portraits? The medium will turn out softer. He agreed immediately, but he still wants in blue colour. Told him my doubts too. I don't know how it will turn out, as I didn't try it before. It strikes me suddenly that he must have seen the following portraits on my website too.

This set of portraits is one of my favourites. I like the mood, expression and the softness of this medium on a lady portrait. This lady looks like the singer Tracy Huang to me, but in fact not.
Just a partner of one of my clients. They are done about 10 years ago.

Portraits of a lady in watercolour - progress 2
Back to this drawing, the pure blue colour turns out to be too raw to me. Looks like she is poisoned. I rang up the client, asking whether I can add in some shades of black. He agreed as he trusted my professiionalism. Glad to hear that, and I felt less restricted now, and do what I think will look good to this artwork.

Portraits of a lady in watercolour - final
It may have some divergence with what the client has in mind initially, but I think it looks better now. At least not so raw. Strived a balance between what he wanted, and what I think would turned out better.

Family portraits in colourpencil

family portraits colourpencil 130308
Took quite a long time to do up this family portraits in colourpencil. Quite a fair bit of details, especially when using cross-hatching method.
The photos provided are 3 different individual photos.
Have to make sure that they don't look wierd when put together. Proportion is one of the most important factor I need to take care of. Not on the face alone, but the relation with one another.

Couple portraits in pencil

A cross-hatching approach style of pencil shading portraits, with some finger rubbing on the faces and the girl's shoulder part.

Portrait sketches in pencil

Very urgent job.
2 days delivery.
The client is preaparing a book for this guy who will be going oversea.
These portraits will be inserted in between the pages.
Luckily, what she wanted are simple sketches of portraits in pencil, or else I won't be able to finish in time.

guy portrait pencil sketch 3
guy portrait pencil sketch 4

Different expressions and angles captured. Looked so different in all the 7 photos provided.
So the sketches all looked like different persons.
Think he should look closest to this portrait above.

Couple portraits in pencil

couple portraits pencil 190208
Not a really straightforward job here, as the photo provided has a teddy bear in between them.
I have to omit it and imagine the parts and shades behind it.

Couple portraits in pencil

Another Valentine's Day gift, but it is couple portraits in pencil, instead of caricatures.

Lady portrait in pencil

Portrait pencil lady 200108
I like the overall feel of this portrait.
The hair, the eyes, the overall mood and feel, her expression, the hatching method on the clothes, the distinction between the treatment of the hair and shirt.
Most importantly, the photo provided was not really good.
The face was in the shades, especially on the eyes part. I tried to shade less to bring out the brightness of her eyes. Perhaps her features were quite pronounced, it turned out better than what I have expected before I started sketching it.

A2 size portrait in pencil

lady portrait pencil A2 131207
The shading of this A2 size portrait turned out quite good.
Looked like airbrush rendering.
I used fingers to rub to get the smooth shades. Thanks to the texture of the cartridge paper I used too.
The hair looked silky too, isn't it?

Portraits in pencil

A relatively distorted and under-exposed photo given.
Think the lens was too closed to the subject when it was taken.
Top of the hair was cropped off too. I added in upon the client's request.
This usually happened when using handphone camera.
Even the portrait came out look distorted to me.

Third sketch done before the shading.
The proportion here was rather different from what I usually did.
Noticed the total width of the 2 eyes was only half of the width of the whole portrait?
Didn't get it in the first 2 rough sketches.
Felt strange why it looked off.
Studied the photo again and did it at the third time.

At least, the outcome was satisfying. Worth the effort of sketching it 3 times.
One of the better portraits I have done recently.

Top of the guy's hair was cropped off in the photo.
I have to add in based on imagination again, so that the overall portraits looked better, and complete.

Lady portrait in pencil

Quite a bad photo provided - under-exposed.
I tried not to put in too much shades on the shadow and the hair parts.

Couple portraits in pencil

I like the overall feel of the intimacy of this couple, and especially on the sculptural shading part of the guy's facial muscles.

Portrait in colourpencil

Not talking much on the purpose of this portrait.
Don't think it is good to do so here.

Couple portraits in pencil

This client didn't brought his photo when placing his order, but has the girl's (blur) photo with him
Asked me to snap from my handphone camera.
Told him the quality is not good.
But he doesn't mind.
Luckily he was quite pleased with the outcome.

Portrait of Yusof Ishak

The client didn't tell me what he needs this for.
He just wanted the ex-President of Singapore - Yusof Ishak to be sketched in pencil, without full shading.
Didn't gave any photos. Just sketch from the Singapore $2 currency notes.
Don't know why - I keep feeling that the portrait on the notes was distorted somehow, on the eyes, the nose and the face shape, while I was sketching it. Since I don't have his other photos, I just followed what I saw on the notes.

Same girl in both portraits. But looks rather different to me, even in the photos provided.

Portrait in pencil (detail shading)

She used to order a caricature in ink from me.
Think she's not really sure of what she wanted when she placed her order, or maybe to go for a lower price drawing.
Finally got what she wants now, from her expression when she collects this portrait - with detail pencil shading.

Portraits in pencil

Settled these 2 orders on this Friday night, as I need to finish 10 individual caricatures in colour with theme for Ministry of Manpower over this weekend. Stressed!!!

Portrait in pencil - simple sketch

Haha.... Did you notice anything wrong / missing in this portrait drawing?
Only realised after the client told me about it.
Pai seh! Promised to add in for him when he brings it back for touch-up.
