Caricature theme - soccer

Caricatures couple soccer cheer lady
Finally found the right way to get the images displayed correctly on Blogger from Flickr.
Noticed the difference between the 2 images above and below?
No more jagged lines. And no more eyesores.
I copied the link directly from Flickr and paste in the html for the top image.
The one below was copy the image link and upload through Blogger. Whether I uploaded as small, medium or large format, it will still look jagged.

This theme was done long ago, think nearly 10 years ago.
The client go this image on my website, made some modifications in the requirement.
Another clearer image of the same theme done years back.
(By the way, I don't have a large and clear softcopy of that previous caricature in my portfolio. Either that was snapped using analog camera, or my first and low end 1.3 megapixel Fujifilm digital camera last time. )

Caricature theme - Oriental Wedding on Tuk Tuk in Bangkok

Client's brief:-
"1) In traditional oriental wedding costume (usually ang mos like oriental stuffs)
2) Wedding to be held in Thailand, Bangkok. Background can have the usual tuk tuks, temple icons.

Extra informations for your creative ideas: > Groom and bride are currently based in USA to work. They are going back to Thailand to hold the wedding."

More works here - besides the Chinese traditional head dress and costumes, still have the Tuk Tuk, temples and shrine. Spent more time than the normal caricatures.

Portraits in pencil

A relatively distorted and under-exposed photo given.
Think the lens was too closed to the subject when it was taken.
Top of the hair was cropped off too. I added in upon the client's request.
This usually happened when using handphone camera.
Even the portrait came out look distorted to me.

Third sketch done before the shading.
The proportion here was rather different from what I usually did.
Noticed the total width of the 2 eyes was only half of the width of the whole portrait?
Didn't get it in the first 2 rough sketches.
Felt strange why it looked off.
Studied the photo again and did it at the third time.

At least, the outcome was satisfying. Worth the effort of sketching it 3 times.
One of the better portraits I have done recently.

Top of the guy's hair was cropped off in the photo.
I have to add in based on imagination again, so that the overall portraits looked better, and complete.

Caricature theme - sexy biker on Harley Davidson

Same client's orders.
Hopefully the girl is sexy enough as what she has expected.

Inserted here, as I forgot to make a time stamp on my blog when it was done.
Clients idea:- Having the chemist holding the rat from Ratatouee above a boiling fluid.
The skeleton in it belonged to another rat. Quite cruel........ Hahaha.......

Caricature live sketching for Kimetics

One hour event at Furama City Centre again.
Some miscommunication with the event company for this event.
When he made a booking with me for this events few weeks back, I told him I have adjusted my price. He said ok. Quite surprising. Thought he will said ' No lah. Can you charge me the old price this time? Budget lah....."
Then 1 day before the event, in case it may slip his mind on this new rate, I messaged him.
He replied, asked me why I jack up my price last minute? And he told me the reason above.
Told him it was agreed earlier. I didn't change my price last minute.
He agreed.
I am prepared that this will be our last job.
At the event, he saw me sketching the caricatures using fountain pen. He was surprised, saying that seldom see caricaturists in Singapore used such mediums.
Then I overheard him speaking to the guests that he saw and used many caricaturists in Singapore, but hard to find such a good skill one. Really?!! Thank you. So touched. At least my efforts in getting quality caricatures were appreciated.
Maybe this was not our last job! Hahaha......

That event organiser kept looking and checking (if the ink was dried) on this couple caricatures.
Think he likes this artwork.
I like it too, especially the guy's caricature.

These few caricatures were quite good to me. At least, they liked their caricatures.

Her boyfriend didn't manage to get his caricature done, as there wasn't enough time to sketch him. At least can snap a photo together.

Caricature live sketching for Rohm & Haas Singapore Annual D&D 2007

William the caricaturist can't make it for this event.
He passed it to me.
One hour event at Grand Copthorne Waterfront.

Very eager to get drawn, even before the starting time. Asked me twice whether I can start now.

A close resemblance one, I think.

He kept asking his friend whether it looked like him, and then subsequently commented that it doesn't look like him.
I think so too.
See the eyes of the caricature? Smaller than the actual person, right?
When I started inking the eyes, he was smiling, on and off.
Thus, his expressions were not consistent throughout. It was like piecing features of different facial expressions (and muscle changes) together!
That's the worst part for me.
I told him that he has to hold his smile all the way, or else I can't capture his essence (features and facial muscle) the caricature won't look like him. He said ok. Still smiling initially, and subsequently not smiling at all, even if I asked him to do so.
He chose to do so. I have done my best.

These 2 gentlemen saw the outcome of the friend's caricature.
They knew the importance of holding on their smiles.
They told me right from the start of the sketching that they wanted a smiling caricature.
See the difference now?

Caricature live sketching for CPF Board Annual D&D 2007

An hour event at Furama City Centre, which used to be named as Furama Hotel.
Checked on Street Directory before coming, to ensure I don't go to the wrong venue, as I knew there was another hotel named as Furama Waterfront, near Outram and Tiong Bahru area.
Coming to this hotel again this Saturday for another event. So coincidental! Twice in a week!
This client - CPF Board looked for me directly. They wanted a silhouette artist. Thus, I asked William to do it. Given a choice, I would still prefer to draw caricatures, as compared to silhouette cutting.

First to kick start this event.

Enjoyed drawing her hairstyle.

Her features were fun to draw!

I think this one was one of the best live caricatures done.
Fun to sketch, not very unique features overall but with characters - Nerdy (Sorry!)
I gave him a full body caricature to bring out this essence, with a bag sling over his shoulder.
Shiok Shiok!!!

All of these caricatures lying on the desk next to me. Why? Hahaha..... I have put in too much ink. All waiting to be fully dried up before inserting into the plastic bags.

Caricature for Mastercard

A special client, who wanted to see the every stages of the caricature and details, from the concept, drafts, sketches, colour schemes, detail pencil sketch, inked stage to the final artwork. They have ordered such package for previous jobs.
Think they are too used to be treated that way, to ensure everything goes according to what they want. Of course, a special price for such package and privilege. Another client who used to work in this company also opted for this package too.

Client's request:-
"Can you draw him drinking beer and playing golf at the same time at the "Desaru Golf & Country Club" (the web site is http://www.desarugolfclub.com.my/index.htm),
but instead of Desaru, please spell it as DESPARU Golf & Country Club, with musical notes floating from his head.
Please include then and now MasterCard logos 1986 & 2007.
Please draw a Gurkha somewhere in the background with the words "Friend of Gurkha Contingent"
Can you add a small picture showing him receiving an award from the The Governor of Hong Kong for his work in the police force:
Please use the Royal Hong Kong Police Force logo from the following web site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rhongkongpolicelogo.png#file
"

Certain requests were added and removed subsequently as we moved on, after some discussions with me.

She wanted a statue of Guan Gong/Guan Yu (关公/关羽) and some words in the bubble.

More detailed draft. Though I have told her to ignore the resemblance of the caricature (as this is not the final detail sketch yet. Need to get the every details correct at this stage), she is still very concerned about it. Hahaha......

The colour scheme, to give her an overall idea of the whole drawing, so that she can make the decision on the frame colour at this stage.

The detail pencil sketch. Noticed the Guan Gong was out of the altar? Have some discussions with her till she finally approved to have him at this size. Main reason was that I can't get the details out at that scale.

Everything was set at this stage, waiting for the colouring.

Colouring done! I took a snapshot of the finished artwork and emailed it to her for approval, before I scan and send it for framing.
She said "It looks great!"

See this scanned version. Which is better? I still prefer the scanned version. The colour is closer to the original artwork, and a lot sharper.

Caricature theme - hugging

He wanted a simple theme of hugging.
Had the inspiration of the hugging posture in the "Ghost" movie, when I started drawing this caricature, but afraid he may not like it. It was late at night then. Thus, didn't give him a ring to check. Stick to his original plan.

Caricatures for DBS

A farewell and retirement gift.Just like the OCBC jobs, another group from DBS came to me, wanted to have a caricature done for this gentleman.
Told them that there's another similar order for the same person.
They dropped the idea. If I wanted more business, shouldn't have told the latter. Hahaha..... Anyway, can't finish in time.

Caricatures DBS pencil sketch
Took a long time sketching this draft, as compared to the inking and colour.
Surprised?
Ya. Need to compose the layout and getting the features right, at this scale.
The paper was A2 size. Sounds large but looking at the amount of details to be included, space for the caricatures were rather limited. Thus, have to pay more attention to the features especially.
Caricatures DBS pen and ink
Inking and colouring were hard too, given that this was a portrait format. Have to reached the top part when drawing, and yet not crumbling the paper below.

Caricatures DBS A4
Clearer now with the colours put in.
Mainly to show his lifestyle.
1) Working in DBS, with the DBS building in the background.
2) His hobby - tennis.
3) Another hobby - playing with the percussion drum (this was what the other party had in mine for their order too).
4) always longing to watch "The Spiderman" movie, but didn't have the time. Now enjoying the movie with popcorn in his hand.
5) Leaving for United States for his retirement, with the landmark - Statue of Liberty in the background.

Though it took longer than my usual time to complete such collage/montage style of drawing, but I think the effort I put in was worth it. The outcome was good too! Got satisfaction too.
