Caricature theme - traditional Chinese wedding

Q-Digital Caricatures - Chinese Wedding
The client wanted this (Q-Digital caricature) theme, but prefered hand-drawn, than using Illustrator (still hand-drawn, but medium is digital) to do it.

Couple wedding caricatures traditional Chinese wedding double happiness
Thus, he resorted to taking up my all-time popular category - caricature with theme in colour marker. Hand-drawn, and customise theme and designs. Enough of the traditional Chinese wedding costumes which I usually drew.
This time, I follow the design in Q-Digital caricatures above, made some amendments.
Note the difference between these 2 caricatures. For the Q-Digital caricature, they can only work with the front view photos, as the template are ready made. Customise one is any angles, provided the photos given are sharp and good.
Can't find a good place to put the "喜喜". The best place is to have them holding it.

Caricature theme - traditional Chinese wedding

Client's brief:-
"Hi there,
We recently found one of your illustration and we love it (see attached), you're very talented!
So we are wondering what's the fee and the turn around time for something similar to the attachment?
We live in Los Angeles, and we'd like to pay with US Dollars.
....do we get the hi-res JPG (300 dpi) of the illustration? We need it for printing purpose...
...For something at least 8x8 inch, 300dpi.
...I just looked around your blog and gallery once again, they look great!
I was wondering if you illustrate/design custom couple caricature?
...We're going to have a small (Chinese Banquet) wedding in September 12, 2009 and we're trying to incorporate our Chinese culture into the invite.
We're going to wear the Chinese Wedding costumes in our wedding as well (I've attached our logo).
We're goofy, silly and fobbie wanna-be."

tradional Chinese wedding couple caricatures Johnny and Cicilia (lmedium)
Usually when my clients' compliments before the job, sort of stress me, meaning that I cannot disappoint them for their job. :D
Frankly speaking, traditional Chinese wedding theme is usually a headache to me, because of those tiny little details.
However, when I draw them painstakingly, the result is usually quite rewarding, and appreciated by the clients.
Since this couple only needs it in softcopy, and they stay in United States, I scanned, cropped the file into a square (8" by 8"), uploaded the different sizes to my server for them to download.
That's the fastest way they get the artwork too.

Client's feedback via email:-
"Hi Jit,
This is way too awesome. We love it.
Thank you so much! :)
Yes, now you can go ahead and delete those from the server.
Once again, thank you so much!
We may need to use your awesome skill again in the future...
Take care!
Cicilia & Johnny"

Caricature theme - Indian & Chinese wedding

An oversea order from Canada.

Client's brief:-
"I came across your work through a google search. I really adore the Chinese wedding couple. I've attached the two jpegs off your website that I am interested in. What is the difference in price for the two?

I am interested in getting something done for my wedding next year. In Canada, it is common to send out "save the wedding date" cards and I would like to incorporate a caricature. I am Chinese and my finance is Indian (Hindu). We are happy using the Chinese wedding couple, but are also curious if there are any mixed Indian/Chinese templates.....

My fiance and I are interested in keeping him in the Chinese groom, but perhaps having me in a red Indian attire (like a Lengha) and himself carrying me....."

I've attached three photos of a traditional red wedding lengha. The first one (Lengha 1) shows the colour and detail I would like on the caricature. Since the model is sitting, i've included the Lengha 2 photo of a model standing up, to show the shape of the Lengha. (Please do not include a head scarf as this is more a North Indian and Muslim tradition). Lastly, i've included the photo-Lengha 3 to show you a bindi that i would like on my forehead. I prefer the more gold decorated one rather than a dot-like bindi.

Indian and Chinese wedding caricatures
Q-digital caricatures are not customisable.
Thus, this client can only go for caricature with theme in colour.
As usual, the killing one are the textile details.
Quite impossible to follow every details. Hence, I need to simplify the details.

Feedback from the client:-
"...The work looks fantastic. Thanks again and it was a pleasure working with you."

Caricature theme - Chinese traditional wedding

Client's brief:-
"Hi Jit,
I would like to order a Theme Caricature. I have no preference for
either marker or digital. Perhaps you will be able to provide me with
ideas after looking at the theme I have set out below.
Event: Friend's Wedding
Theme: Shanghai Tang - 1940's era
Purpose: to be displayed outside the hotel ballroom - at the reception area
Ideas: 1. Backgroud: Outside the house
2. Attire: Chinese Traditional Costume
3. Action: Dancing/Groom carrying bride 'walking' towards the house
1. Background - Outside the house
The reason I want to have the house as the background is because I
want to show the Groom's family's 堂号。堂号 that is ancestral name or
title, is mainly used for different surname , clan or family. Check
out - http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-hans/%E5%A0%82%E5%8F%B7. If cant read
chinese, you can translate it into English. 堂号 is normally engraved on
a wooden plaque to be placed on the entrance of the house. See the
picture on the wiki website. The Groom's family's 堂号 is 东鲁。So the
words to be displayed is 东鲁.
2. Attire - chinese traditional costume
Their wedding theme is Shanghai Tang. Not sure if 1940s era has the
1940's wedding costume. Tried to search online but dont seem to be
able to find it. So guess to 'fit' the background above, chinese
traditional costume can do.
3. Action - Dancing/Groom carrying bride 'walking' towards the house
Since i want it to be outside the house, guess these are the 2 actions
that I can think of. Maybe you can let me know if you have other
ideas.
I have a question - is A3 size too small to be displayed outside the
ballroom? If it looks nicer if its bigger, then let's go for a bigger
pic...."

Shanghai 1940s Chinese traditional wedding couple (revised)
A mixture of traditional medium (pen, brush and colour markers) and digital medium used here.

Client's feedback:-
"my friends and their families, especially the hubby-to-be, likes the pic. They are
impressed with the artwork as this is the first time they actually see
themselves as a cartoon! hahaha... (am glad i chose the right artist,
phewww!)"

Mr Q's Q-Digital caricatures and some new products....

I have been looking for artists to work with Portrait Workshop all these years.
Recently, just get in touch with an artist (Mr Q) who does his caricatures digitally, using Adobe Illustrators. His style is totally different from mine. I think the caricatures look clean, unique and cute. Very comic style. That's why he called it Q-Digital caricature. (Q- 版漫畫肖像 in Chinese.)

These caricatures come with the following templates which he has pre-drawn.
(As to create all these templates take up a lot of time, he doesn't do customised designs currently.)
Your caricatures will be drawn, based on the photo you provide.
He's quoting SGD$55 for each face drawn.
You will get a high resolution hardcopy printout at A4 size (21cm x 29.7cm).
On top of that you will get an A6 size (10.5cm x 14.85cm, 150dpi) softcopy in jpeg format for your keepsake.
When you have the caricatures drawn, you can opt to have it on other templates at half the current price.

Caricature theme - Chinese traditional wedding

Very upset with this client.

Her friend ordered a caricature of them as a gift to them last December.

Now, she ordered another a wedding caricature for her wedding purpose, through the same friend, as she stayed in Beijing.
Did you see anything wrong with the caricatures above?
Below was the brief she has sent to me.

Written there - key features:-

1) Bride and bridegroom in Chinese traditional wedding costumes (including red headdress, bow etc)

2)Bridal sedan chair.

3) "喜喜" and fireworks as the background. ( I told her friend that I can't create good fireworks effect using marker when she placed the order. So it was not drawn in.)

She got back to me, saying that she was satisfied with the faces, but it was not according to their Chinese traditions (not acceptable to her family of older generations), that the bride and the bridegroom both in the sedan chair. It looked like the bride was outside the sedan chair.
I said no. She was popping out from the sedan. Then she asked me to switch their position. It was hand drawn and not done digitally. I can't change like that.
She claimed I should change for her, since I don't know Chinese traditions.
Told me she has stayed in Singapore for more than 20 years....... Singapore is more traditional than Beijing....... I should know it.
Told her I didn't see any couple in sedan chair on their wedding day!!!
And I don't draw according to traditions.
If based on tradition, don't need to draw caricature already.
First, caricature is big head and small body. This is not proportional and traditional way of drawing.
Second, she has thick lips. If I exaggerate her lips thicker and bigger, what would the bridegroom's parents think? According to traditions, wife with big mouth will eat till the husband broke (嘴大吃穷郎). Will the older generations accept that?
Most importantly, this caricatures shouldn't have done in the first place, if she wants to follow Chinese traditions. Why?
See the reference provided by her. Can you see her face? The bride shouldn't reveal her face at all till she reached her bridal room. Her face will be covered with a piece of red cloth. How contradicting can she be?
She claimed that she didn't state she want both of them in the sedan chair.
I said she didn't said both of them cannot be in sedan chair too, since she wants to argue that way!
I draw based on the brief given.
They just mentioned key features.
So of course I will design for them, since they didn't specify every details they wanted.
That was my usual way of working on caricature with theme.
She told me "the creation is on the features but cannot be on the theme of the picture"
This really made me angry.
I treated it as an insult, and you may think I am seeing it too seriously.
No creation?! Should I draw out all the features she stated standalone. The faces, the headdress, the sedan chair etc. All layout side by side then!!! No need my creation to put them together as a caricature with theme?!! Am I an artist with no pride?!!
I replied her in email, stating clearly she has no respect to me as an artist. It was an insult to me.I will not redraw for her, even though she was preparing to pay extra for the redraw, regardless of any prices!!!
I know this post will scare off some potential clients. However, if they belong to the same school of thoughts as her, I would rather missed such orders. I have my principle. Not an artist drawn for the sake of money!!! I want to enjoy drawing, not upset!!! Damn...... Wished I have never encountered such client at all!!! Worst client I have seen in my 13 years of drawing life!
