Caricature sketching for Singapore Chinese Orchestra 10th Anniversary

This event was done one month ago, 13th August 2006, 4pm to 6pm at Singapore Botanical Gardens. It is an event hosted by Singapore Chinese Orchestra for their 10th Anniversary.
Since I need to email out the photos taken of the guests (with their caricatures taken together), I think I might as well to post up some photos to share.

As usual, I post some of the more satisfied caricatures done here.
I will post all the photos on my website, under client list later.

What is a caricature?

Just read this article somewhere on a blog this morning.

According to Lenn Redman, a caricature is:
"an exaggerated likeness of a person made by emphasizing all of the features that make the person different from everyone else."This quote is taken from Redman's book
How To Draw Caricatures, which I have just ordered from Amazon to try and improve my own caricatures. I think this is the best definition of 'caricature' I've ever heard. Redman also makes the distinction between 'distorting' features, and 'exaggerating' features, 'exaggeration' being "overemphasis of the truth", while 'distortion' is "complete denial of the truth". In this way, caricature should be seen as an exaggeration of certain features of the face, rather than distortion.

He also references Einstein's theory of relativity! Basically, that we perceive things as they are only because of their relationship to each other. So if somebody has a big nose, we need to draw it bigger, relative to the other facial features as well as relative to the 'average' nose size. Somebody's ears might look huge relative to his tiny head, but compared with an 'average' pair of ears, they might be no bigger at all.

Come to think of it - is that what Singaporean wants?
Of the caricatures I have done these 12 years, there are only a few clients who look for exaggerated caricatures. Most of them wants a good-looking caricatures. Some have moles, but requested not to make it too obvious, some even requestd to take the moles out. Some said no double chins please. They just want to look good in the caricatures for their boss, girlfriends and boyfriends, wedding caricatures, birthday gifts.
It is not easy to draw exaggerated caricatures.
Reason one being it is hard to capture one's unique features and exaggerate them, especially when they don't have unique features. This is especially usual in Asian faces.
Reason two is my clients don't allow me to do so, even if I can do it. Hence, I can only exaggerate it in a mild way, not to offence them, as they are paying for the caricatures. I can play up more in live sketching in events (hehhehheh.... cos they are getting it free) . However, I still have to hold back a bit, as I need them to keep my artworks instead of throwing into a trash bin after the event.
As when we exaggerate some features, it will be quite subjective, what I see in my eyes may not be what the client sees. If I play up too much on certain features, besides being ugly to them, the likeness may be lost, to them. Hence, I have to balance between the resemblance and the exaggeration part. I have thoughts throughout these 12 years to break free from what I am doing now and do up some caricatures what caricatures should be. However, there's just too many hinderance there. Some of my friends told me that, this is my style which my clients have used to and like too. Be myself. Do something different from the traditional caricature style. (???!!!) Caricaturists will tell me that - hey, this is not caricature!
Perhaps, I will have to slowly inject more exaggeration into the caricatures, slowly chaging my style and my portfolio. There's a risk that I may loose some clients, but there may be chances of getting new clients too. Hahaha.......
See some of the exaggerated caricatures I have done. Do you like them? And do you like to look like that? Cute, exaggerated.... and ugly???!!! Hahaha....... Let me know.

# Just received a comment from a client through email, for a caricature done yesterday.
"The drawing of my boss looks a bit chubby as compared to the picture sent? He wouldn’t be happy if we have it framed up… is there anything that we can do to sort this out?"
See?Just slight exaggeration and they can't take it ......... Sigh.............So much on the exaggeration talk of caricatures above.

Kar Loke's drawings

This is the drawing done by my son last night.
The building behind is the IKEA Singapore building.
That car is my car.
Really amazed he can put in light and shadow on the car initially.
Later, he told me that the white area is because the light grey marker runs out of ink. Hahaha....
He likes IKEA because of the 'ballroom' - that room full of colourful balls for the kids.
Another reason is his mummy working in the Standard Chartered bank, opposite of IKEA. We went to fetch her before.

I am really surprise when I see this.
He's able to imagine and draw from a plan view.
And Jiaxi, his little sister is sleeping, in between me and my wife, with mouth open and messy hair. Hahaha.....

This one , Jiaxi and him playing in the little bed meant for Jiaxi, though she doesn't sleep there.

This one, done few months back - 31st March 2006, he inks and colours on my pencil sketch which I have done for a customer from US.
I didn't use that sketch as the paper is dirty.
Hence, I let him try inking with brush and colour with my markers, with my guidance.
He' really happy with the result.

I told him, once I put these drawings on my blog, many people will be able to see them, including his friends, from different PCs. Let's see how he feels when he sees his drawings online.

illustration for Mediacorp Singapore re-broadcast this morning

This morning around 8:10am, my wife wakes me up, telling me that my works is on TV.
I wonder what is it? Could it be my caricature and portrait works?
I walk into the living room and saw the still animation illustrations (this is a link to my previous website - same domain, different design) I have done in 2001 for MediaCorp Singapore, Channel 8 TV Programme - Kids@World. They use it for story narration.
I have done quite a number of episodes (think more than 10) for them through Oak3films.
It is quite a fun experience, as they gave me full freedom in using different styles and effects in the illustrations. I have done some using pencil as the linework, colour rendering using Photoshop (hand-painted). I didn't upload it to my website yet, just don't have the time, despite that the website is up for several years. Sigh...........

Caricature sketching for Michael Page International Pte Ltd 10th Year Celebration in Singapore - the photo which I can't upload in previous post

Can't squeeze this photo in previous post. Hence, I have to upload it here.

Caricature sketching for Michael Page International Pte Ltd 10th Year Celebration in Singapore - photos re-upload

These are the caricatures done, which I am quite satisfied with, for this event. Just didn't managed to squeeze in the first caricature done for that night. Looks like I have to make another post for this event.

My favourite caricature done for this event.

I really have fun drawing this.

This one too.

Going slightly wild.... testing Singaporean's tolerance for exaggerate caricature. Hahaha......
I should exaggerate more next time, if I come across those with unique features.

She didn't smile that big in the photo, else it will be quite close to the caricature done for her.

Caricature sketching for WorleyParsons Family Day 2006

This is the last event I have sketched for this week.
It is for WorleyParsons Family day 2006, just an one-hour event.
The venue is at Marina South, Marina City Park, Singapore of course.
Met a shadow cutter, Desmond Koh there. He's a freelance caricaturist too.
He told me that he's been in this line slightly longer than me.... Sorry, but this is a new name to me. Must check out with Welles, a shadow (silhouette) cutter cum caricaturist too. He might know him.
Some photos to share.....

Top (brothers) and bottom (parents)- this family managed to be the first few who get their caricatures done.

Adding in a little bit more to the caricature - full body caricature.

The little girl who has been standing behind, patiently waiting for some time.

The father who gives up his chance of being drawn, to his son.

The little girl who missed her turn and managed to be the last to get the caricature done.

There's still a long queue behind, about 20 more people waiting to get there caricatures sketched. Unfortunately, the event company only hires me for an hour. Let's see if we get to meet up again next year.....

Caricature sketching for Michael Page International Pte Ltd 10th Year Celebration in Singapore

This event was a long night. It was held in CHIJMES Hall, CHIJMES Singapore yesterday. Initially the client, Jason booked me and Reggie (another caricaturist) for 2 hours each, from 7pm-9pm. However, due to overwhelming response, they extended Reggie for another half hour, and extended from 9pm to 9:30pm, then from 9:30pm to 10pm; 10pm to 10:30pm, and then another 15mins more after 10:30pm, to sketched the last 2 staff (one of which is the managing director) from Michael Page International. ( The starting part is for their guest). I am rather worried along the way, when they keeps on extending. My initial plan is to rush back after 9pm to finish up the 4 caricatures with theme, in which the client is collecting the following day.
In all, I have sketched 25 caricatures for the night.
However, after several tries, I have problem in uploading all these 25 photos to this blog. I think it's the same reason. There's a limit on the number of photos we can upload per blog post. Now worse, I can't even upload the photos after deleting the initial photos being uploaded. Perhaps, I will make a new post and try again.

caricatures printed on crystal block

Hey, I am really excited over this crystal block - this is a new product from Portrait Workshop.
I just got it done last evening.
I use the caricatures done for Ritz Carlton for their HR International Conference 2006 held this August, as sample, as it is colourful and bright. One of my favourite caricatures done so far.
The dimension is 13cm in height, 18cm in width, depth is 3cm at the bottom, 1cm at the top.
The caricature artwork is within the crystal block. Hence, no fear on the scratch and waterproofing issue. One thing to take note is that do not display in areas exposed to direct sunlight, as all colours fade when exposed to sunlight.

Front view of the crystal block.

View from the right....

View from the left....

Packed in a box.

Don't you think it's a unique gift for your boss or CEO to display on his desktop?
Introductory price is SGD$90 per piece.

Anti-Corruption Avengers

My Friend, Wilfred just sent me this video. Does this happen to you when driving in Malaysia?

comic illustration on chalkboard for Singapore Biennale 2006 at Tanglin Camp - part 2

Seems like Blogger.com does not allow more than 15 photos per blog. Hence I posted photos of the illustrations done here.

These are some comic illustrations I did on site for them. It is something different, as this is the first time I draw on chalkboard, and they are huge, about 4' by 8', 7 pieces altogether. Another collection added to my portfolio. These boards are put at each stall of the event, where another artist will do some writing of the menu on it. See this photo here, with me in it? It is taken by Sara from Lumina using her 3G Nokia N73 handphone. She said she' can going to upload to her blog using that phone....free usage as sponsored by Singtel........wow, so good..... wonder who will sponsor me on a 3G phone plan one day....... and my next phone - Sony Ericsson p990i.

Wordpress blog landing page

Just discovered that it is the template I have chosen for my Wordpress blog, is the reason for the graphics not showing up on the landing page. It looks good in black and goes with my website theme, but I have to let go and get another closer colour theme, which is able to display the graphic on the landing page. It looks so much more interesting now, though I still prefer black colour theme, like this blog.
Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 ( Wii / PS2 )

Just found this video on one of the blogs. My son is drooling over this new game, seeing Goku and Vegeta able to transform from Saiyan, to Super Saiyan 1,2,3 and 4. In fact, all the other characters in the Dragonball Z can transform. When is the release date?

indexing of blogs

It seems like Google indexes Wordpress.com blogs faster than it's own Blogger.com.
I am posting similar blogs on both of my blogs.
In fact, after I have put up on this blog, then I post on http://caricatures.wordpress.com/.
It takes 2 days for Google to index the latter, but 5-6 days to index the former.
Anyone has the same experience to share?
I like this blog, as it shows all graphics at the landing page. For Wordpress blog, I have to click each news, then I see the graphics. Is there any setting I have done wrongly, or this is default setting for all Wordpress blogs templates? Can someone tell me?

long forgotten blog......

While browsing through blogs and search engines these afternoon, I happen to come across a blog which I have subscribed (http://www.bloglines.com/blog/caricatures) and didn't do anything to it. Alamak! This is getting out of control. Should I update it daily too? That's giving me more works on my already tight schedule............
