My second year sketching for kidsREAD Volunteer Appreciation Day.
This year, the client engaged my service for 3 hours ( 6pm - 9pm, with a break in between for prize award to kidsREAD volunteers ), instead of 1 hour (last year). It was extended by another 30 mins till 9:30pm, to sketch for the keen management and committee members of NLB (National Library Board).

Some of the volunteers (of kidsREAD) told me that they didn't get the chance to have their caricatures sketched by me. Thus, they need to grab their chance this year. Oh, they still remembered me?:D I am so honored.

Caricature live sketching for Tan Chong Motor Nissan Almera Soft Launch - Day 1

A series of 4 days gig, 5 hours per day, 12pm - 6pm, with 3 slots of 20 minutes in between, for the soft launch of Nissan new Almera, by Tan Chong Motor.
My job is to sketch for their patrons and customers at their showrooms, at Bukit Timah and Ubi, this and next weekend respectively.

The caricature templates of the new Nissan Almera I have prepared beforehand as per requested by the client, one for the guys (see above) and one for the lades and kids (see below). I will just need to draw in the caricatures and add in some lines of the car to make it complete.

I am lucky to get to start the gig with an interesting face!

I attach his photo and an example of a picture we image it to be.
Obviously I am not an artist like you. So I leave it in your good hand to have a beautiful drawing.
The theme should be:
He is cycling along the Marina Sand Bay with his back (like far away) can see alot of tall buildings but specifically one named CPF Bldg (which is our office now) and may be somewhere along the Marina Sand Bay some buildings (but one named Marina Bay Financial Centre (which he where is will be heading to).

The theme is a couple in formal clothes, being their 1st caricature:
Man in suit with collar shirt (open button, no neck tie, like yakuza)
with a Hachimaki (headband), and woman in formal dress.
Background:
Mt fuji and the Torii gate.
Reason being most of her life revolves around my father-in-law and her
most memorable trip was Japan.....
We have decided not to have our father-in-law wearing the headband. He may not like it being strict looking etc.
For our mother-in-law, dressing can take reference from xxxxxx of capitaland (formerly of raffles hotel?) due to similar aged woman look...."

"I have attached new and higher res frontal pictures of our friends who are getting married soon - Ian (the guy) and Cleo (the girl).
May we request for the caricatured faces to be less exaggerated, thanks!
Description of caricature theme:
Ian and Cleo in their SQ uniform (kebaya respectively) as per the first set of photos which I've enclosed earlier
The couple holding hands OR Ian carrying Cleo (whichever you think looks better)

You may not believe it, but the Sarong Kebaya is the most time consuming of this caricature.
Probably drawing faces is a breeze to me.

After completing the previous gig which ended at 12pm, I have only less than one hour to rush down to the venue. I have a hard time looking for this new venue, which is neither on my car's GPS, note my iPhone's Google Map.

My job for today and tomorrow is to entertain the kids with my caricatures, while the parents can focus on their purchases(?) of the condo units.

"Female: She is a Senior doctor (Dr Phoa Lee Lan) nickname: Fairy God Sister to the Department of General Medicine’s Secretaries. Character like Hua Mulan. Like to stand up for people. Love Justice.

The client initially ordered the first 2 caricatures in pen and brush (black & white) outline.
However, upon seeing the color version (which stands out more, and facial muscles shown up betterwith the color shades) of the last caricature, they decided to request me to add in colors.

"Male: HOD (A/Prof Sin Fai Lam). Always preach peace and has a good name to many doctors under him in the past 30 plus years. A smiley, jovial good man. Speaks English and French only. I am his secretary and he is one of the best bosses alive...."

"Dr Christopher Willis. A commoner Doctor. Nice to the poor and weak. All patients loves him. He speaks mandarin and Cantonese.
Stand for justice and he look like and laugh like Santa Claus. He has a tummy.

The client who engaged me for my sketching service for this gig, used to engage my service a few years back when she was working in Bowne Singapore.
The initial booking was from 7pm - 10pm, but was extended for another hour due to popular demand from her guests.

Another job for MCYS, via City Neon, instead of Pico Art.
I guessed they could have seen what I did for them previously, and they decided to engage my illustration service again.

Total of 34 portrait digital illustrations this round. They took me quite some time to complete.

Some of them are pretty interesting to illustrate, because of their features, posture, expressions and lighting, while the rest of the reference photos are of very low resolution. I have hard time figuring the features in between the pixels.

A very long brief, from a client in India:-
"Dear Jit,
Really very happy to work with you again!
For a Pilot friend of mine, I would like you to draw an A3 Digital caricature with theme in colour. The theme will be a comic book cover, on the lines of the Asterix Comics. As there are many details to be captured, so please feel free to use horizontal layout, if you think it will be better.
Details with all the sample photographs are as follows:
1. Caricature - The entire caricature to be divided in an approximately 80:20 ratio.
a. The top 80% of the image to show the Pilot flying the aircraft and remaining 20% for some characters from the comic book. Refer to the Power Point Slide.
b. Emphasis of the caricature to be on the Pilot and the Aircraft, the 20% of bottom scene can be shown as per your artistic sensibilities.
2. Title of the Comic - ADVENTURES OF Kirthanix IN MOROCCO
a. The font type and look to be exactly how Asterix is written in red color in the attached photo. (Photo 1). The title to come right on top of the caricature. A lightning bolt to be included as in the photo.
3. Aircraft – Important: Exact aircraft model picture attached (Photos 2, 3 and 4).
a. Please note the angle of the aircraft and the moving propeller should be as shown in power point slide and also attached (Photo 5). Important: But the details of the aircraft’s body will be exactly as given in the Photos 2, 3 and 4.
b. Important: A lovely glossy metallic sheen for the entire aircraft body. All the details to be captured – green band behind the propeller, tiny red patch, star on the left wing, all the stripes, 414117 number & squirrel like animal called Skunk on the nose of the plane. Upon zooming into the image, the animal is better visible. (Link for pics of Skunk if required – (http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/skunk.html). Bits of clouds in background.
4. Pilot – He is in a sitting position where the hatch is and flying the aircraft. He is wearing a white half sleeves shirt and has 4 stripes on the epaulet on his shoulder Attached photo (Photo 6) and Photo 7 is only to give an idea of the white shirt look.
a. Important: Maximum emphasis on a big wide smile and eyes – a mischievous glint (Photos 8 to 14). I think Photos 12 and 14 perhaps capture the glint best.)
5. Bottom Scene - This portion to show an outline of Morocco, with blue and white domes. The scene is a party in progress with comic characters Asterix and Obelix being entertained by several beautiful belly dancers. Feel free to draw them as per your wish, though some pictures from the Power point are indicative. Just ensure that Obelix and Asterix are visible clearly & women are very beautiful! (Photos of Asterix and Obelix – Photo 15 to 20). You can use any comic images of Asterix and Obelix that u like!"

I did a lantern with ice cream sticks and rubber bands last year, for my daughter's school lantern-making competition.
This year, I tried a different material - wire.
The actual making was way different from my initial plan, on the wiring part.:D
It wasn't easy to tie them together.

Dressing it up with Brand's Chicken Essence bottle, mask, wig and other party materials.

A 2-hour digital gig (8pm - 10pm) on HTC Flyer at Paulaner Bräuhaus, Singapore.
Pretty bunch of challenges this evening, as compared to my usual gigs.
First, dim lighting.
Second, no wifi available. I've got to use my iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot for the upload and download of the digital caricatures for printing (no wifi printer too).
Third, I have to do roving caricatures.
And I only got to realize these challenges upon my arrival on site.
Anyway, I have encountered several such situations in my past 17 years as event caricaturist. It's just a matter of getting used to the environment (for first and third challenges) and being well-equiped (for second challenge).

Let's get the ball start rolling....

You can see how rush this order was. From enquiry, sending photos, confirmation of order with deposit, drawing till collection, all done is less than 9 hours! On top of that, I have jobs on hand to be completed....

I started to get a better hang of sketching on this HTC Flyer now. My lines are more free and loose now.:)

This is a fun one!

I like this too, especially the marker strokes on his goatie and shirt. There's so much feeling looking at them!

The event organiser who engaged my service. He has a pencil version yesterday, and felt that the pen and marker version looked better. And thus his second attempt.

I began to love these lines. Didn't expect I can draw such style within the limitations initially. I think I just need to more time explore and experiment with the style for different gadgets. It's exciting to see a new drawing style created within limitations.

This day finally came, after several test drive drawings on HTC flyer.
A 4-hours gig (12pm - 2pm & 5pm - 7pm) for 2 days at HTC Weekend, using their HTC Flyer at Ngee Ann City, Civic Plaza.

My little workspace at kids' corner.:D

The wifi printer at my back, which I will do a wireless printing of the caricature drawn, from the HTC Flyer later.

First piece, using the pencil tool on HTC Flyer Notes app.
A pretty tough one, as this subject - emcee is working ~talking on his microphone....

Nevertheless, since I have captured the drawing process, I might as well post it up here.

This pencil tool has the pencil medium texture and quality.
However, after looking at the printout, which was blown up to A4 size, the resolution was not so good, and it is not contrasting. In addition, we can't choose the 4R paper size, which is nearer to the original drawing size. (That's what happened to most default wifi printing from tablet. It happened to my iPad too.)

I switched to the pen tool from this sketch onwards. Now, the printout looked contrasting, because of the black colour, instead of the greyish tone from the pencil tool. These lines looked more harsh, but I see this as a challenge - doing my best within the limitations! I played with the line thickness (manually, not with the pressure sensitivity found in Wacom Cintiq). With such a small drawing area and short timeframe, I use the sketchy instead of the refine style approach.

My another favourite. To me, Caucasians are generally easier to draw because of their sharp features.

Besides wireless printing, another cool thing about this HTC Flyer is that I can upload the caricatures drawn, directly to my Flickr albums, from this client's loan demo set.

I rarely do such illustrations. It is not fun and lively as in caricatures and portraits (with expressions and postures etc). This is a mix and match of different reference images, and illustrated in Macromedia Freehand. It is not any easier. In fact, I spent a long time to ensure the front, side and back views tally technically.

test drive HTC Flyer

The client loaned me a HTC Flyer demo set, to test and get used to drawing on it, for their upcoming gig (HTC Weekend) at Ngee Ann City this weekend.

The only app which supports drawing with stylus (the rest of the drawing apps are only possible using fingers) is the built-in app - Notes.
I used pencil for the above Osama sketches.
I am pretty happy with the outcome, except for the size and resolution, meaning that most likely I can't blow it up too much when printout, without compromising on the resolution.

I came across your site some time ago when my co needed a unique gift for one of our bosses. :)
This time I would like to ask about your rates for a caricature for my wedding anniversary. Hubby and I met on board a double-deck bus - I would like to have an illustration done with him in driver seat of the double deck and me outside waiting for the bus... something like that. :P
The bus is the old SBS bus type (see attached pics), should be Service 64 and can you also put him in the driver uniform?.....
The bus is facing left so can see the service number.
The location should be at Sims Place bus terminal (quite diff from other terminals cuz it's small and open-air -- see pic)
He should be driving service 64 and I waiting for the bus.
Pls draw him WITHOUT the spectacles.....

Anyway, there are 2 photos of Mike Shove - he is the President - the person we are giving the drawing too - you decide if to refer to the one with jacket or without..your call.

2 draft previews as per requested by the client.
My preference is the top one, and the client eventually chose the same one.:)

The client wanted a huge one for this - A1 size. I don't draw many artworks of this size often.
As the biggest marker paper available in the market is A2 size, to draw it in A1 size, I have to join 2 pieces of A2 marker paper together.

I wanted a change this time.
Still the same A1 size as per requested, but I proposed to the client to do it digitally. Still hand-drawn, instead of on paper, I draw on my Cintiq (computer). In fact, upon completion, I found that I have to spend more time on it than drawing on paper.

But the advantage here is that I can draw them on separate later, and position them as deemed fit.

And this is the main reason for drawing it digitally - I can print it out as one piece in A1 size, without joining two A2 size marker paper together as one piece. Though the joining part is not really obvious, but the feeling of having one piece is always better, right?

A 2-hours digital gig (1pm - 3pm), but was extended by another hour (till 4pm) due to popular demand.

My setup (from left):- Macbook Pro, Digital Photo Printer (4R size), 12 inch Wacom Cintiq (where I sketched on) and last, but not least - the stylus!:D

First piece. No hiccup in printing.... phew!
It shouldn't happen, since I have tested it many times. And I am using cable for printing, instead of wifi printing. Lower possibilities of printing failure.:D
